The branch offices of City Colleges of
fhicago, Regents College, University of
aryland and Webster University held their
iual graduation ceremony this past week-
end, presenting 65 members of the base com-
munity with college degrees.
According to University of Maryland’s
Area Director for United Kingdom and Ice-
land, Dr. David Glaser, “It takes an average
of 10 years for military members to earn a
degree. Consequently, our students are about
35 years of age when they receive their
bachelor’s degree.”
Despite the relatively “old” age of the col-
lege graduates, they received just as much, if
not more, satisfaction and honor as would a
younger, four-year college graduate. RADM

Defense Force; Col. Thomas Allen, Com-
mander, 35th Wing and CAPT Charles But-
ler, Commanding Officer, NAS, Keflavik,
were among the distinguished guests who
praised the graduates for their hard work and
perseverance in attaining their degrees.
One graduate, Dean Deloach, spent 18
years on his degree, but completed 75 percent
of his requirements while stationed in
Keflavik. “The hardest part was fitting school
in with my work and family schedule,” said
'eloach. “I went to class seven days a week
two consecutive terms. Sometimes, I’d
home and my wife would ask: “Who is
this man coming in the front door?”
Although Deloach’s wife,
Vicki, was glad her husband
finished his schooling, she
added, “We’re all very proud of
him. It took a family com-
mittment, and we all feel a part
of the accomplishment.”
Another graduate, Israel Perez
with degree in hand, gave a sigh
of reliefand stated, “It’s all over! ”
But, realizing there is more be-
yond an associate’s or bachelor’s
degree, he quickly added, “Yet,
it’s just the beginning!”
