Sometimes it gets boring watching ‘The Crow’ alone in your
basement. Sometimes you lose your page in ‘The Vampire
Lestat’. Sometimes you scratch your Bauhaus record and then
it goes “Bela Lugosi’s d-d-d-d-dead.” Your blacks don’t match.
You rip your fishnets. You mispronounce Siouxsie Sioux. Your
new boyfriend doesn’t even understand nihilism and you just
remembered Peter Steele is dead? Yes, we’ve all been there.
Come reminisce about all those problems that only fellow
creatures of the dark would understand, at Reykjavík Goth
Night. The theme is the Seven Deadly Sins: wrath, greed, sloth,
pride, lust, envy, and gluttony… so pick your poison. And please—
dress to depress. HJC

Summertime… And The Livin’ Is Easy
Reykjavík Jazz Festival
Tired of hanging around with your plebeian friends who like
Mammút and Agent Fresco? Looking to find some like-minded
peers who appreciate a long solo in the dorian mode? Well good
thing, ‘cause the Reykjavík Jazz Festival is coming, and with a
plethora of both Icelandic and international jazzers, it’s bound to
satisfy your urge for cool musical artistry. Kicking off on August
11 in Bíó Paradis with a new documentary from Jón Karl Helgason
about Tómas R. Einarsson, the bassist and songwriter, this
year's fest has a special focus on women’s jazz due to the 100th
anniversary of women’s suffrage in Iceland. So put on some Louis,
practise your polyrhythms, and grab your ticket to the A train,
‘cause it’s time to get smooth. HJC
