of the diagram, the arrows indicate the known directions of measles
spread as recorded by medical officers for each district in their annual
reports. The numbers (1 through 12) against medical district locations
indicate the month of the year in which cases were first recorded. Solid
arrows relate to 1928 and pecked arrows to 1929. In the lower part of
the diagram, the circle areas are proportional to the total number of
measles cases reported in each medical district affected by the epidemic.
The histograms give the number of reported cases by month for Iceland as
a whole and for Reykjavíkur. All maps are based on data and reports in
the annual volumes of Heilbrigðisskýrslur. Medical districts not affected
by the epidemic are stippled. The upper part of the diagram is drawn at
the same scale as the lower and may be superimposed upon it.
