EDMONTON, AB — The
Global Connections Interna-
tional Market at the Capital
EX Festival will see an infl ux
of Icelandic goods from across
Canada and from Iceland, says
Walter Sopher.
Sopher is the proprietor of
Icelandic Goods by Brendan
and Vice Chair of the Icelandic
Canadian Chamber of Com-
merce. He says a variety of
companies from Iceland will be
taking part in or sending mate-
rial to the festival.
Among them are contempo-
rary Icelandic clothing, which
will be seen in an Icelandic
fashion show on July 21 and 22.
Icelandic company Glofi will be
sending the latest woollens, and
Connie Clark (Sigvaldason) of
Edmonton will help coordinate
the show.
There will also be other
goods, including pönnukökur
pans from Ásbjörn Ólafsson
ehf.; books, cards and calen-
dars from Snerraútgáfan; candy
from GOA-LINDA; cards by
Winnipeg artist Karen Jóhanns-
son; Icelandic water courtesy
of Larry Finnson; hardfi sh sup-
plied by Ian Palsson of Palsson’s
Fine Foods in Arborg, MB; and
Penzim skin products from Ice-
land’s Zymetech.
Walter Sopher estimates that
about six people will have to be
hired to make sure the Icelandic
component of the Global Con-
nections International Market
goes smoothly. He’d also like to
see more companies take part.
“They are missing a big oppor-
tunity — it’ll be good.”
The Icelandic component of
the market has also been sup-
ported by the efforts of Iceland’s
ambassador to Canada Markús
Örn Antonsson and the the Ice-
landic government.
This is the fi rst year for the
festival, which replaces Edmon-
ton’s Klondike Days. Next year
the Global Market should be
even bigger, says Walter Sopher,
who is looking forward to the
opening of the festival on July
20. “It’s certainly going to cre-
ate a whir for Iceland,” he says.
The Captial EX Festival
takes place in Edmonton July
20 – 29. For more information

GIMLI, MB — There’s
more to Gimli than a viking
statue. At least, that’s what a
13-part series called “The Big
Attraction” will show, profi ling
Gimli and 12 other communities
famous for their landmarks.
Scott Jantzie was in Gimli
recently interviewing people
in the community, including
Barb Foreman of Amma’s Tea
Room, Tammy Axelsson of the
New Iceland Heritage Museum
and Rosalind Vigfusson and the
New Iceland Youth Choir.
He says the aim of the series
is to highlight the history, cul-
ture and people in places that
may be known more for their
icons. “We’re trying to educate
the rest of Canada about what
this part of western Canada is
all about,” he says. “Most peo-
ple travelling don’t go north of
the Trans-Canada Highway.”
“The Big Attraction” is
being produced under license
with Canadian Learning Tele-
vision, and once production is
complete it will be broadcast
within 18 months. Scott Jantz-
ie estimates that the series will
air starting in fall of 2007 or
spring 2008.
