The club’s tent was very well attend- ed by both children and adults, reports Gerri McDonald. “The theme of this year’s event was Nordic Journeys,” she says. “We chose to feature Hrafna Flóki, a discoverer of Iceland; Guðríður Þorbjar- nardóttir, a remarkable woman; Guðríður Símonardóttir, an un- willing traveller; Vilhjálmur Stefánsson, Arctic explorer; and Bjarni Tryggvason, astro- naut. Tied with this theme was storytelling about Leifur Hep- pni. Inga Henrikson read a short story on Leif the Lucky to the children as they earned clues for a ‘passport’ activity.” Ron Goodman In this digital age, is there still room for the old-fash-ioned calendar with a pic- ture at the top and the days of the month below? The answer would seem to be yes! The Icelandic National League of North America has been printing and selling such calendars since 1992, when they were started by Nelson Gerard as part of his role as League historian. Drawing from Nelson’s extensive collec- tion of historic portraits of Ice- landers, as well as photographs from other groups, the calendar quickly became a much-wanted keepsake. In 2003, when Gwen Mann of the Leif Eiriksson Icelandic Club in Calgary was appointed League historian, she was ex- cited about the completion of the League history book and furthering her interest in ge- nealogy. She was somewhat surprised that the historian was responsible for the production of the League calendar. In her usual energetic fashion, she es- tablished a committee of LEIC club volunteers and with no background or experience in calendar production proceeded to design and produce the 2006 version, which featured Snorri participants. At the 2005 INL of NA convention in Vatnabyggð, SK, a list of possible topics was cir- culated for future calendars and delegates were invited to priori- tize their choices. Many topics such as historic churches, paint- ings by Canadians of Icelandic decent and North American historic sites were among the favorites. The only unanimous vote was that the calendar con- tinue to be produced. The LEIC calendar com- mittee consists of Gwen Mann, Chair; Ron Goodman, Comput- er Support and the valued con- tributions of Linda Bjarnason, Carol Blyth, Bertha Eggertson, Kelly Flemming, Margret Gep- pert, Margaret Grisdale, Mavis Marteinson, Christine Mueller, Christine Stuart-Smith and Iris Torfason in photo selection and design. This committee selected the topic of historic sites in North America for the 2007 calendar and proceeded to collect suit- able material. It takes about 14 months to develop, design and produce a high-quality calendar using vol- unteers. The number of pages was limited to 28, and the size was reduced to facilitate mail- ing in a standard size envelope. All of the historic photos were monochrome, so it was decided that the interior would be print- ed in black and white, which re- sulted in a considerable reduc- tion in printing costs. As with the 2006 calendar, the picture selection was based on topic, geographic location and quality of print, although high quality historic prints are difficult to find. Again, a col- lage on the back of the calendar consists of additional photo- graphs that were not used in the main body of the calendar. For each month, a written description was solicited from the contributor of the photo, edited to a common format and placed below the photo. In the selection and editing process, extensive use was made of a computer-based projection system, so that all committee members were focused on re- viewing the same image and changes were done as needed in real time. The design and production of the INL calendar helps bind the various clubs together and contributes to the preservation of Icelandic heritage. The rev- enue received from calendar sales accounted for over 20% of the budget of INL of NA in 2005 and the budget for 2006 forecasts nearly 45% of the INL revenue will come from calendars. Future calendars will in- clude such topics as historic Icelandic Churches (2008) and paintings by Canadian artists of Icelandic descent (2009). For more information, visit www.inlofna.org/.
