Lögberg-Heimskringla - 14.07.2006, Side 13
Visit us on the web at http://www.lh-inc.ca Flo Holigroski is the grand- daughter of Jon Sigurdsson and Bogga (Ingibjorg) Hall- son who lived at Geysir farm at Mary Hill, MB. As she re- lates in a story retold at her son Craig’s wedding to his fiancée Michelle 100 years later, her paternal grandparents had a somewhat rocky start to their life together. “It was in 1905, the second of February — a cold winter day and for whatever reason, I guess my grandmother’s dad didn’t want Jon Sigurdsson to marry his daughter Ingibjorg.” Flo speculates it was be- cause of Jon’s religion — he was a member of the Unitarian Church — that Bogga’s father, a Lutheran, objected. “So her brothers locked the old man in the barn so the young lovers could make their getaway in a horse and cutter, at least 60 miles across coun- try to a place called Raeburn. From there they took a train into Winnipeg and were mar- ried in the home of a Unitarian minister. “Even people with objec- tions [to a marriage] don’t necessarily know how things might go — but they lived to be happily married for 65 years.” Flo Holigroski lives in Winnipeg, MB.
