Space was limited, and due to popular demand we now present a few more vignettes of Icelandic North American history through the pages of Heimskringla Looking back through the pages of Heimskringla Headlines of history For many decades, it was a rare thing for a newspa-per to print in any colour other than black. Occasionally Heimskringla used colour for special issues. Above left is an issue dated 22 December 1944, with the phrase “Most glorious wish of men and so beautiful to all: MERRY CHRISTMAS!” in bold red type. Icelandic celebrations were also given special emphasis, especially Íslendingadagurinn, the Icelandic Festival of Mani- toba. At the top of the page of the edition shown at right, dat- ed 28 July 1948, “Heimskringla wishes Icelanders luck on Au- gust 2 in Gimli.” Recent June 17 celebrations, comemmorat- ing Iceland’s recent indepen- dence, are also covered.
