EDMONTON, AB — At
the Annual General Meet-
ing of the Icelandic Canadian
Chamber of Commerce at the
offices of CashStore, Inc. on
September 29, new members
were welcomed and several
initiatives were proposed. Ap-
proximately 15 people attend-
ed.
Five representatives of
Landsbanki Islands, which
joined the ICCC early this year,
attended the meeting to intro-
duce the company to the group
and take part in discussions.
Another new member, Neil
Bardal of Neil Bardal Funeral
Homes in Winnipeg, MB, also
attended.
The meeting was chaired
by Gordon Reykdal, CEO of
CashStore, Inc. and Chair of
the ICCC. Mr. Reykdal noted
that the organization included
just over 100 members, and
entertained a motion that find-
ing more businesses to join the
ICCC and increase its activi-
ties be made a priority.
Among the items also dis-
cussed at the meeting were
a number of issues raised by
Iceland’s Ambassador to Can-
ada Markús Örn Antonsson.
The ambassador remarked on
stalled trade talks between
Canada and EFTA (consisting
of Iceland, Norway, Switzer-
land and Lichtenstein), and ef-
forts that were being made to
reduce or eliminate trade barri-
ers. He also mentioned the dif-
ficulties in establishing direct
flights for travel and transport
between Canada and Iceland,
in which opposition from Air
Canada has been a major ob-
stacle.
Those in attendance agreed
in general that direct air routes
should be opened up, and pro-
posed various potential solu-
tions, such as pursuing part-
nerships between Icelandair
and airlines in Canada such as
WestJet, which compete with
Air Canada.
Aside from mentioning
upcoming conferences in To-
ronto and Montreal which will
promote investment opportuni-
ties in Iceland, the ambassador
also expressed Iceland’s disap-
pointment at Canada’s lack of
support in an upcoming vote
on Iceland’s membership for a
non-permanent seat on the UN
Security Council. He noted
that Canada has chosen to sup-
port Turkey in the 2007 vote,
which was met with surprise
from the Canadians in atten-
dance.
Representatives from
Landsbanki spoke on invest-
ment opportunities in Iceland
and the work their company
has pursued since being priva-
tized three years ago. Speakers
included Ingólfur Guðmunds-
son, Managing Director;
Viktor Ólason, Consultant;
Jóhann Viðar Ívarsson, Senior
Manager; Ólafur Þórsteinsson,
Representative for the bank in
its Halifax office; and lawyer
Birna Hlín Káradóttir.
The European War.
23 September — Von Kluck, who
oversees the right arm of the German
Army, still sits in the same location
north of Amiens. But the battle con-
tinues with incessant assaults and in-
tensive fire, now in these places, now
in others, though little is accomplished
by it. Nevertheless it is said, that the
endurance of the Germany Army is
slightly weakening.
Waterway from Shoal Lake, ON
to Winnipeg.
Winnipeg city has recently been
searching for a water supply for itself,
one which would be inexhaustible how-
ever large the city becomes. Men have
feared that the rivers, from which the
city has taken its water, has already
become insufficient. It was, in the end,
after various discussions, determined to
route water here to the city from Shoal
Lake in Ontario. It is a distance of about
80 miles. It is estimated that this water
route would cost in the range of 12 to
14 million dollars.

Also noted in this issue were prepa-
rations that could be made to improve
wheat yields for farmers in Manitoba,
Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1915.
Also, a fire destroyed the home of Mrs.
Ólafur Johnson in Gardar, ND — she
was the only one home, and suffered in-
juries from the fire. The house was in-
sured against fire for $250, but property
damage was estimated at $600.

your 120th Anniversary
The Great War
The first half of the 20th century saw interna-
tional conflict on an unprecedented scale. Many
North Americans of Icelandic descent took part.
This edition, dated 1 October 1914, conveyed up-
to-date news on the First World War in Icelandic
to friends and family back home.
Also, the booming city of Winnipeg, MB,
where many Icelandic immigrants sought work,
needed a better water supply.
