Brian Tomasson recently took a trip to Iceland, one of many he has
made over the years. During
his two-week stay, he refused
to speak English, practicing
his Icelandic every chance he
got. It turned out to benefit
him on the way home.
“Coming back from the
family reunion in Iceland in
Akureyri in June, I was at the
airport and I went to Icelan-
dair. I stood in line like every-
body else there.
“I get to the front of the
line there and the lady asked
for my passport. She looks
at me and says in Icelandic,
‘Are you Icelandic?’
“And I told her that I was
a ‘Western-Icelander.’ We
spoke for several minutes in
Icelandic.
“She said, ‘You have an
absolute Icelandic name, and
you speak Icelandic just as
we do here.’
“This progressed to the
next step; she said, ‘You
know, there’s a lot of empty
space in first class — would
you like to fly back to Min-
neapolis in the first class sec-
tion?’ I said, ‘My God, you’re
a lifesaver.’
“So flying back, I had lots
of room — it was just great.
And so I say, I guess it pays to
have the old Icelandic name
and speak a bit of Icelandic.”
Brian Tomasson lives in
Winnipeg, MB.
