EDITORIAL David Jón Fuller Managing Editor Editor’s note: The follow- ing remarks were made on the occasion honouring Neil Bar- dal at the Scandinavian Centre 30 November 2007, and appear here with the author’s permis- sion as a letter to the editor. Dear Editor: Lorna and I were very pleased to be in attendance on the occasion honouring Neil Bardal at the Scandinavian Centre. All of us there that evening have our own unique and personal relationship to Neil — some as genuine cous- ins, some as kissing cousins, and the rest of us as want-to-be cousins! Over the years no single in- dividual has done more for so many segments of the Icelan- dic community than has Neil. His insight and his breadth of knowledge and understand- ing of our Icelandic community are without equal. His visions for its future have always been tempered by what is achiev- able, and have been supple- mented by his own generous contributions toward their re- alization. Within recent memory, Neil initiated the movement to seek much-needed ongo- ing fi nancial support for the Department of Icelandic and the Icelandic Library Collec- tion at the University of Mani- toba. He saw that they, along with the Chair of Icelandic Language and Literature, col- lectively known as the “Icelan- dic Presence,” formed a unique academic centre in the midst of North America’s many Icelan- dic communities. Neil sowed the seeds for what was to become the suc- cessful VIP (Valuing the Icelan- dic Presence) campaign, which went on to provide fi nancial stability for the preservation and enhancement of the Icelan- dic entities at the University. That this came about is due in large measure to the course of action initiated by Neil and thereafter, supported by his on- going dedication and involve- ment. Thank you Neil for this singular contribution to the University of Manitoba, and through it, to our Icelandic community.
