Toronto, ON: ‘Sko! (everything happens
all at once)’, recent work by Svava Thordis
Juliusson at Brayham Contemporary Art,
1318 Queen Street East, Toronto, ON, M4L
1C5. Svava Thordis was born in 1966 in
Siglufjordur, Iceland, immigrating to the
Canadian prairies at age ten. She began
undergraduate studies at the Alberta Col-
lege of Art and Design in 1993 and com-
pleted a Bachelor of Fine Arts at NSCAD
University in 1997 Juliusson received her
MFA in studio at York University in 2007.
She currently maintains a studio practice
in Toronto and is also director and owner of
List... gallery/studio. For more information

Winnipeg, MB: The Jón Sigurdsson Chap-
ter IODE will hold its annual Spring Bridge
and Whist Luncheon on March 28th at
Betelstadur, 1061 Sargent Avenue. Bake
Sale starts at 11:30, lunch at 12:00 noon,

Thursday 16 April
Selkirk, MB: Come to the heart of the
Interlake and celebrate the first day of
summer with the Selkirk Brúin Chapter’s
Sumardagurinn Fyrsti. Enjoy homemade
Icelandic delicacies such as rullupylsa,
pönnukökur, and vínarterta. As well we will
be showcasing local Icelandic talent and
Selkirk’s own Icelandic choir “Kaffi Tima”.
This year we will be getting together April
16th at the Selkirk Legion 403 Eveline
Street, Selkirk. Doors will open at 7:00 pm
and concert to start at 7:30 pm. Silver col-
lection to be taken at the door.

Sundays
Victoria, BC: The first Sunday of each
month the Icelanders of Victoria are of-
fering a genealogy night open house style
at Fred Bjarnason’s. You will have the op-
portunity to use his collection of genealogy
books, use his password to a variety of
databases and have an experienced hand
to guide you in your quest to find your Ice-
landic ancestors. Please come out and join

LANGUAGE CLASSES
Monday 9 March
Winnipeg, MB: Language and Communi-
cation for Internationally Educated Agrolo-
gists (LACFIEA) is a free, evening program
at the University of Winnipeg designed to
help professionally trained newcomers ac-
quire the language and cross-cultural skills
they need to succeed in their agricultural
field. The program is made up of 32 three-
hour evening classes held twice a week.
Lessons are integrated to develop skills
in reading, writing, speaking and listen-
ing. The next session begins March 9. For

Wednesdays
Gimli, MB: Kaffitími (coffee time) in Gimli
takes place at 3 p.m. each Wednesday,
meeting at Amma’s Tea Room at the Gimli
Waterfront Centre. There is no sign-up and
no teacher. Anyone is welcome to drop in;
the only fee is the price of your cup of cof-
fee. There is only one rule — you need to
talk Icelandic in order to participate in the
chat around the table. If you just want to
listen at first that’s fine too!

New Westminster, BC: Icelandic lessons
are held on Wednesday evening at 7:30

Christina Sunley’s “The Tricking of
Freya” book tour
Canadian author Christina Sunley grew up
hearing about the experiences of her Ice-
landic grandparents, including the story of
how her grandfather’s family fled a mas-
sive volcanic eruption in Iceland in 1875.
In ‘The Tricking of Freya,’ Sunley draws on
her rich heritage to tell the fictional story of
a woman in search of a mysterious relative
and a family secret that takes her from a
small village to the volcanoes, glaciers, and

ents the film, Country Wedding (Sveit-

Valdís Óskarsdóttir (Iceland, 2008). Óskars-
dóttir’s Country Wedding is a light-hearted
comedy about a dysfunctional family en
route to a rustic, intimate wedding in the
beautiful countryside of Iceland. Things
start to unravel from the beginning when
the small wedding party becomes lost.
Óskarsdóttir manages to skillfully walk the
fine line between hilarity and despair in this
realistic portrait of nuptials where more of-
ten than not, they provide fertile ground for
the airing of tired grievances and secrets

In this quirky, heartfelt film, Anna Hall-
grímsdóttir is a poet, dish washer and mar-
ijuana dealer who lives with her two sons,
Krummi and Úlfur. Tired of her daily life and
the coldness of Iceland, she decides it is
time to show her sons more of the world.
Before changing her lifestyle, first she must
sell her “business,” which consists of her
mobile phone, containing her extensive and
valuable client list. Set to a score of lively
Icelandic reggae, the next two days propel
Anna through numerous family adventures,
culminating with a crowd of customers,
friends and relatives who have gathered

hold its annual Þorrablót in the Arborg

New Iceland Youth choir will entertain, and
Laxness biographer, Halldór Guðmundsson,
will be our guest from Iceland. More details

Association of Northern California hosts
Þorrablót, March 14 from 6:30 p.m. - 12
p.m. Held at the Municipal Building on 33

Þorrablót planning has begun! Eat exotic
foods from Iceland, drink Brennivín and
dance. We will be enjoying the wonderful
culinary delicacies of chef Magnus Hédins-

Icelandic-
Canadian
astronaut
flies elderly
plane
Canada’s first aircraft, the Silver Dart, flew again recently, but this time the
stick was in the hands of Reyk-
javík-born Canadian ex-astronaut
Bjarni Tryggvason. The space-
man flew an upgraded version of
the historic vehicle in Hamilton,
Ontario, on Friday, February 6,
achieving a speed of forty miles
per hour and a top altitude of al-
most four meters.
The Silver Dart first flew on
February 23, 1909, in Baddeck
Bay, Cape Breton, with designer
J.A.D. McCurdy in the pilot’s
seat. Tryggvason’s Hamilton test
flight was in preparation for a
recreation of this historic event at
the original location on the same
late February day.
“It was a bit shaky,” Tryg-
gvason reported after returning
to earth. However, he considered
the test flight a complete success.
