The New Iceland Singers under the direction of Rosalind Vigfusson
A true Icelandic cele-bration of spring was held March 16, 2013
as Esjan, the Arborg Chapter
of the Icelandic National
League of North America held
its annual Þorrablót. With
well over a hundred people in
attendance, everyone gathered
in the spirit of food, fellowship
and fun with a wonderful
meal, formal program and
dance to follow. One of the key
moments in the program came
when David Gislason formally
thanked Consul General Atli
Ásmundsson and his wife
Þrúður Helgadóttir on behalf
of Esjan and the people of
Arborg and area for their many
years in dedicated service.
Their passion for helping to
ensure the preservation of
Icelandic culture in Arborg,
and all communities that they
have served over the last nine
years will not be forgotten.
Atli responded to David’s
speech expressing his fondness
for the area and his position in
Winnipeg over the past nine
years. This followed with a
presentation by Doris Benson,
President of the Esjan Chapter
of a parting gift to Atli and
Þrúður on behalf of the Arborg
Chapter and community.
Master of Ceremonies for the
evening, Avery Simundson, a
native of the Arborg and Geysir
area, reflected on the transition
that Atli and Þrúður are
making with many appropriate
quotes that kept the audience
captivated throughout. A
fine moment in the formal
program came when, Páll
Björnsson, historian from the
University in Akureyri, spoke
on the lasting legacy of Jón
Sigurðsson, Iceland’s most
prominent leader in its fight for
independence from Denmark.
The formal program closed with
a performance by a burgeoning
new choir of local people who
call themselves, The New
Iceland Singers, sharing with
us many traditional songs both
from Iceland and the Icelandic
communities here in North
America.
It is safe to say that everyone
in attendance thoroughly en-
joyed the evening’s events as is
always the case at the many fine
Þorrablóts held in Arborg.
