ASSOCIATE EDITORS
When it was decided that I would fill in for Joan Eyolfson Cadham, our Editor, while she was taking a brief break, I had a definite moment of panic when I realized that it
would be up to me to write the Reflections for this issue.
As happens to many writers all I could see was a very blank
page and no words coming to mind until I realized that I was
in very fine company. The Lögberg-Heimskringla in all of its
permutations has had exceptional people take on the editorial
role, not to say that I consider myself exceptional or on a par
with any of these previous editors. The L-H has also had several
excellent women serve as Editors.
I became involved with the L-H initially because I was so
very proud to be a close relative of Sigtryggur Jónasson, my
great great uncle, and I wanted to do something that would help
preserve this long standing publication. Sigtryggur was one of
the founders of the Lögberg and its first editor. Nelson Gerrard,
historian, author and genealogist, also served as our editor. Now
do I have to uphold the reputations of both a great great uncle and
a cousin , both of whom are so well known.? No, I do not. But I
do hope that I will not embarrass either of them during my short
stint in this position.
Recently Páll Björnsson, author of Jón Forseti Allur?, while
visiting Manitoba depicted Jón Sigurðsson as a national hero both
in Iceland and in North America, one who dedicated his life to
the people of his nation. It is my thought that Sigtryggur could be
the Jón Sigurðsson for New Iceland, someone who dedicated his
himself to the peoples of his nation both in Canada and Iceland.
This is my reason for chosing to present, in this issue, Nelson
Gerrard’s tribute to Sigtryggur Jónasson given at the unveiling of
the statue of Sigtryggur in Riverton on October 20, 2012.

Lara Mazur
...from page 1
Through her three decades of
storytelling, Lara has collabor-
ated with many directors, one
most notably is Winnipeg
filmmaker, Norma Bailey.
“Lara Mazur and I have been
dear friends and collaborators
for over 30 years. Lara is a
true artist, and fortunately
for me and others in the film
industry, she decided to focus
her artistry on picture editing.
She is passionate, intelligent,
and fiercely creative and raises
every film she works on to a
richer and more complex level
than it would have without
her. I love working with her.”
Recently they worked together
on the film, The Pastor’s Wife.
Both Lara and Norma received
nominations for Best Editor
and Best Director of this film
at the Canadian Screen Awards
in March.
This is not the first time
that Lara has been recognized.
In the past she has received a
Genie Award, two Leo Awards
and a Blizzard Award, all for
Best Editor, as well as being
nominated numerous times.
Lara is constantly in demand
having edited television series
as well as movies. Many of
you will have watched Arctic
Air, Intelligence, Flashpoint,
Highlander and DaVinci’s
Inquest, on which she has
worked her editing magic.
Because of her integrity
and collaborative nature, it
was not surprising that the
whole post production crew
from Arctic Air showed up
to cheer her on when she was
presented with her award.
This respect by her colleagues
extends to her mentoring work
with women directors, interns,
trainees and her enormous
support of young people in the
industry.
Lara credits her family and
both of her parents, her mother
Hrefna and father, Skapti
Borgford, for encouraging the
pursuit of the arts as a noble
calling and profession.
“A good editor’s work is
in many ways invisible. But
there’s a saying that a film
is written three times: first,
when the screenwriter puts
it to paper; second, when the
film is shot; and, finally, when
it is edited. The editor is a
key creative contributor to the
artistic success of any great
film. In part, this is simply the
nature of the art: good editing
is seamless, allowing the
viewer to slip into the world
of the film,” were the words
of Dusty Kelly of IATSE 891,
who introduced Lara at the
awards,“Lara Mazur’s work is
seamless.”
