The evening began with a delicious potluck dinner with the club providing the baked ham and members bringing various potluck dishes. There were 35 registered members attending, which formed the quorum necessary for voting. Following the dinner, acting president Christine Mueller presided over the meeting. After the executive reports were given, honourary memberships were awarded to Kelly Flemming and Rona Swainson. Dr. Victor Laxdal and Margret Grisdale conducted the election of new officers – this year, members elected a new president, vice president, treasurer and membership recorder. Harmonica Tableau entertained following the meeting. This 14-member group includes harmonicas, guitars, mandolin, and drums. Singing along with this group to many old favourite songs made an enjoyable ending to the evening. On January 24, 2015, Governor General David Johnston opened the grounds of Rideau Hall for an outdoor party. Eleven embassies took part in the festivities. The Iceland kiosk featured a lamb and vegetable broth, ástarpungar, Icelandic flags and pamphlets about the island nation. Lineups began as soon as the doors opened. Within an hour and a half, all 600 servings of soup had been eaten and the doughnuts and flags were also gone. Rideau Hall estimates more than 7,000 people showed up on the grounds that Saturday for the three-and-a-half hour event. Elin Jónsdóttir, wife of ambassador Sturla Sigurjónsson, displayed a scarf of Icelandic wool that she began knitting. Visitors were invited to knit a row to the scarf, which will be given to the governor-general when completed. Over 100 people joined the knitting bee. Their names will be included on the list when the scarf is handed over to Johnston. Members of the Ottawa chapter of the Friends of Iceland helped staff the booth. Guests expressed interest in Iceland and many said they hope to visit it some day. Activities on the grounds included dog sledding, snowshoeing, horse-drawn wagon rides, skating and curling. This was the first year that Iceland has participated in the Winter Celebration. Ambassador Sigurjónsson indi- cated the embassy will take part in future years. Photos of the event can be found at the embassy’s Facebook page.
