might be found to be much inore frequent at the south coast through
closer studies. No botanist has explored wide ranges of the beaches of
South-Iceland.
In all the localities studied by the present writer the species is found
near the shore of the ocean, and never a plant has heen observed more
than approximately 100 meters from the shore.
The approximative distribution of the species ontside Iceland is given
in Fig. 8, which also shows the distribution of the European species
C. maritima. The subspecies tijpica of C. edentula is found, outside Ice-
land, on the east coast of North-America froni southernmost Labrador
south to Florida and Yukatan (cf. Hultén, 19451, but it has also been
