INTRODU CTION
‘þo at’); in 11/10 H2 has ‘þo’ where H1 has ‘þott’. Both ‘eda’ and
‘edur’ occur, the former more frequent in H', the latter in H2.
8. Verbs. Middle voice forms are in <st> throughout present and past
tenses. Individual forms are included in the paragraphs following.
They appear with loss of -t in e.g. ‘liest’ 78/60, ‘sæst’ pp. 28/11
(‘sætst’ H2), but ‘hlautst’ 33/49; of -m in ‘vid komust’ 73/24 (‘komust-
um’ H2); first pers. sg. is in (nst) in ‘Eg þottunnst’ 10/8, ‘eg glediunst’
35/25; cf. Málblöndun, 98.
(i) Pres. indicative: Old em appears in ‘emm eg’ 79/11. The first
pers. sg. of hafa is ‘hefi’, second and third normally ‘hefur’; ‘þu hefer’
occurs 83/19 (‘hefur’ in H2). The form is ‘Eg Jati’ 14/19, but else-
where (13/20, 82/24) the verb is of the ö-conjugation, and H2 has ‘Eg
Játa’ at 14/19. Except in ‘vænnter eg’ (found at 10/12; cf. Málblönd-
un, 97; the construction differs S 7/73, L 21/34), third pers. endings do
not appear in the first pers. sg. Second pers. sg. of e.g.fara, sjá is ‘fer’,
‘sier’; of vilja it is ‘villt’. Simplified long consonant is regular in third
pers. sg., e.g. ‘skijn’, Tes’, ‘fer’. The reduced form ‘þiki’/‘þyki’ is
usual, but ‘þiker’ 53/15 (‘þyki’ H2). Plural forms are regular, but final
-m is sometimes (and final -ð usually) omitted when pron. and verb
are inverted. As noted above, H2 has ‘komustum’, first pers. dual, at
73/24, H1 ‘komust’. Sonant i is restored in the second pers. pl. of vilja,
e.g. ‘vilie þier’ Gþ (L 13/12 ‘vili þer’).
(ii) Present subjunctive: First pers. sg. regularly has the older third
pers. ending -/, but the middle voice form is ‘eg onndust’ 28/15 (‘and-
ast’ H2). Second pers. sg. of vera is ‘siertt’ 15/6 and in Sþ (L 16/14
t.n.). The indic. ending appears in first pers. pl. ‘komumm’ 76/10.
Third pers. pl. is in -/, e.g. ‘siae’ 20/11; of vera it is ‘sie’ in the in-
stances noted 53/2, 20, 22, Gþ (= L 11/11), but ‘sieu’ at 53/22 in H2.
(iii) Pret. indicative: The first pers. sg. a-ending remains in ‘eg
heyrda’ 10/13, 15, Sþ (L 16/21), ‘þorda eg’ 83/16, ‘eg vissa’ 83/17
(‘vissi’ H2), but not in ‘sagdi eg’ 83/18 or in trisyllabic forms like ‘ætl-
adi’ 78/74, ‘suaradi’ 83/18, ‘vaknadi’ 83/33. -st is the second pers.
ending in ‘biost’ 35/21, ‘varst’ 78/73, ‘drackst’ 83/22, cf. interrogative
with suffixed pron. ‘liestu’ (from láta) 77/11. Third sg. of fljúga is
‘flo’, of stíga both ‘stie’ 36/7 and ‘steig’ Gþ (L 15/15), of flýja it is
‘flijdi’ 36/15, 84/11. H2 has ‘Riede’ as the pret. of ráða 12/1,54/18. At
73/14 H1 reads ‘so god sem honum þottu hrossin’, H2 has the sg. form
‘þötti’. Third pl. of sjá is always ‘sau’. Pret. of tjá is ‘tiadi’ 17/3; pl.
