The accumulations of these rocks is likely to be responsible for an
increase of the thickness of the earth crust in Iceland.
From the continental block of the Faeroe Islands towards the
Faeroe-Shetland channel the intermediate layers of the earth’s crust
remain almost constant. The low velocity sedimentary stratum ap-
pears at the top of the crust. The M discontinuity rises on the
account of the thinning of the lower beds with velocities greater
than 7.0 km/sec. An analogous picture, the reduction of the crust
thickness due to the disappearance of the bottom layers, has been
observed by us in the northem and central parts of the Ohotskoe
Sea (23). We believe such cases to speak in favour of the altera-
tions in the crust due to the processes developping at depth.
The data above deal with the general most important and con-
spicuous features of the observed seismic fields only. The cross-
section obtained will be ascertained in the usage of not only the
first but the following waves on the seismograms, in the analysis
of the dynamic parameters of the waves, in the further improve-
ment of the agreement of the seismic records and the correlation
with other geophysical data as well.
A comprehensive comparison of the described interpretation
variant with those presented by NASP participants seems neces-
sary. And at last, a generalizing geologic-geophysical interpreta-
tion of the data available at present from the various geotectonic
hypotheses is needed.
