30 this was really the case, especially that the glacier had become thinner, so that new mountain ridges had become free from snow or ice. Figure 20 is a sketch of the front of the glacier. The western tongue is steep and short. Near the front a huge isolated block is stand- ing on solid ground, with a little cairn upon it. The distance from the block in the direction of the move- ment of the glacier (NW— SE) was 9 m. The eastern tongue is between one and two krn. in length. It ends abruptly in a narrow cleft, that conducts the water discharge from the glaciers to the river Laugará. The glacier margin be- tween the two tongues is rather steep and probably slowly moving.
