open to the south. To the south of this ring of cliffs lies
the greater part of the lowland of the island formed
for the most part of lava from Helgafell. Helgafell it-
self rises just east of the centre of the island. There are
also some headlands in the south of the island, Sæfjall,
Kervíkurfjall and Litli HöfSi, while farthest south is
Stóri Höfði (122 m above sea level). These headlands
are mostly composed of tufa with streaks of basalt here
and there. On the east and west the basaltic strata run
down into the sea.
