II. SEA-BIRD COLONIES.
Just as the cliffs of Heimaey rise perpendicular from
the sea to a height of 283 m at the highest point (Heima-
klettur), so most of the outer islands rise straight up
from the sea to a height at the highest point (Bjarnarey),
of 167 m. The tops of most of the rocks are overgrown
with grass and all the islands are inhabited by sea-birds,
as Fratercula arctica L., Procellaria leucorrhoa Vieill.,
P. pelagica L., and Puffinus anglorum Ray, that lay their
