divided into two groups, 1) the puffin eolony, and 2) the
angelica clusters.
1. The puffin colony.
The puffin colony is to be found everywhere where
there is a sufficient slope and a good aspect to the sea;
the bird is especially fond of having its holes where a
layer of soft earth stretches out on to the outer edges,
but an indispensable condition is that the puffin must be
able to see out to sea from the mouth of its hole. The
puffin colony is like a dark green border around the edges
of the crags and the tops of the islands; above this is
lighter dry meadow land with occasional darker spots
where the puffin colony occupies the higher peaks, but
below is brown tufa. The soil is the same as in the dry
meadow land.
