sheep skins for the annual gathering the
of the “warring” Viking clans. This year we
celebrate the Harvest God Freyr, the god of
bountiful yields, wealth, peace and virility.
Skalds, singers and poets will recite sagas
and poems of the long history of the Viking
people. Musicians will get people dancing
and everyone will eat and drink too much.
Games of skill will keep our women,
warriors and young boys active. Everyone
will wear their finest clothes and jewellery.

Gallery. At a moment in time in American
culture when debate rages over what is real
news and what is fake news, Mystic Seaport
Museum brings back to the limelight a
controversy from more than 50 years ago
that rocked the scientific, historical and
cultural realms of U.S. society. Not only is

Darkness directed by Derrick Belcham.
This film profiles 15 prominent Icelandic
musicians and poets as they return to
Reykjavík for a winter festival, set in

Icelandic art. Following the film, composer

We are pleased to welcome Professor
Guðrún Björk Guðsteinsdóttir to UVic this
semester. Dr. Guðrún Björk Guðsteinsdóttir
is a Professor of English Literature in the
Faculty of Languages and Cultures at the
University of Iceland and the Director of the
Literature, Culture, and Media Graduate
Program. Her main research interests
include Icelandic Canadian literature,
cultural politics, multicultural literature,
narratology, and cross-cultural mediation
and adaptation of literature (including
translation and teaching as well as story-
telling through audio-visual media).
As a Visiting Professor at UVic this
semester, she will be teaching a course
on the Legacy of Icelandic Folklore (GMST
369, Special Topics in Scandinavian
Studies) and providing the following
three Beck Lectures: Free and open to
