This is Iceland.
On a bright, sunny August day –
Sunday, August 19th – a group of gals
drove to Grund Frelsis Church for
their annual Pack the Pews service. We were
fortunate to have two people with us who
are originally from the area – Erla Helgason
Wankling and Dorothy Christopherson
Tytgat. They were able to act as excellent
guides to the homesteads nearby the church.
We arrived early and drove around the lakes
and up and down the gentle, golden hills
where many farmers were harvesting.
The service was conducted by Pastor
Laurel Seyfert from Redeemer Lutheran
Church in Brandon. Pastor Laurel sets a
lovely tone for the service. It was nice to see
that the church had been restored after the
statue of Jesus and the baptismal font had been
vandalized the year before. Special music was
provided by the Witherspoon Sisters – Val,
Cheryl, and Linda – who sang in beautiful
harmony. Vera Bjornson accompanied the
congregation on the piano and the pump
organ. A highlight of the service was the
recitation of the Lord’s Prayer in Icelandic
that was lead by Winona Ramage. Following
the service, the congregation gathered in the
sanctuary for the annual photo taken from the
balcony in the back of the church.
Erla Helgason Wankling showed us the
chairs that flanked the altar, which honour
her grandparents, Jónas and Sigríður
Helgason. The chair in memory of Sigríður
was donated by her husband, Jónas, and
the chair in memory of him was donated
by Erla’s parents, Kristján and Sigurveig
Helgason.
Outside in the churchyard everyone
enjoyed a picnic lunch that included
vínarterta and pönnukökur, cakes and fruit
and vegetables. People lingered over coffee
to visit with family and friends. It was a
lovely occasion in a beautiful location.
