The assertion that the
Great War was the
“war to end all war”
has evolved, over time, from
being an idealistic expression
of optimism and hope in the
midst of a grim conflict into
something of an ironic, even
cynical expression. Often
attributed to U.S. President
Woodrow Wilson, the idea
can properly be traced back
to the author H.G. Wells who
published a collection of essays
called The War That Will End
War in 1914. The idea was even
derided mocked at the time.
For instance, Prime Minister
David Lloyd George is said to
have remarked, “This war, like
the next war, is a war to end
war.” In time, a second armed
conflict on a global scale led
to the Great War coming to be
called the First World War and
today people’s anxieties can be
seen to be escalating whenever
they talk about the possibility
of a Third World War.
In the end, the First
World War was a conflict of
unprecedented scale, but it
seems that it still wasn’t horrific
enough to scare people away
from war altogether. Perhaps
our species is simply incapable
of eschewing violence to such
a degree that we can avoid
warfare. I hope not, but I
wonder.
I find anniversaries related
to war to be personally
challenging. On the one hand, I
think it’s important to remember
the anniversaries of the major
events of history, including the
wars that have been an ever-
present part of history. And I
think it’s especially important
to honour the sacrifices made
by soldiers who answered their
call to duty, particularly those
who gave their all, and to share
in the sorrow of the families
who have lost loved ones to
armed conflict. The bravery
and devotion of those who
have served – and those who
serve today – is worthy of our
greatest reverence and respect.
In my own family, there are
individuals I knew and loved
who served in both world wars,
and some I never met because
they were killed in action,
including cousins in the first
war and an uncle in the second.
At the same time,
it’s impossible to avoid
acknowledging the folly of war
and the failure of those leaders
whose actions lead to armed
conflict between nations – or
within them. While I suspect
that I would have been an ally
of Stephan G. Stephansson,
who incurred the wrath of many
in the Icelandic community for
his opposition to the war, and
the suspicion of many more
outside the community, I can’t
know for sure. I’ve never been
tested and I’m now too old to
be at risk.
So I will honour the heroism
and valour, the patriotism and
dedication of those who served.
I will honour the memory of
their words and deeds, even as I
lament the sacrifices they were
called to make. And while the
Great War proved not to be
“the war to end all war,” I will
cling to the hope that this ideal
remains a possibility, even if
it must await a distant time
and place.
