Ambassador Pétur
Ásgeirsson has
quickly become a
familiar face to Icelandic
Canadians since he
arrived in Ottawa as
Iceland’s envoy to
Canada a little over a
year ago.
If you’ve been reading
Lögberg-Heimskringla
for more than half of a
century – and some of
our subscribers have
been with us that long
– then you’ve probably
seen his face before. Fifty
years ago, when he was
five-years old, young
Pétur appeared on the
cover of L-H with his
father, Ásgeir Pétursson,
who was sýslumaður
(sheriff) of Mýra-
og Borgarfjarðarsýsla
in western Iceland.
(Commonly translated as
“district commissioner”
these days, and
sometimes translated
as magistrate in earlier
times, a sýslumaður is
the senior local official
in an Icelandic sýsla or
county.)
The picture of Pétur and his father illustrated
a story headlined, “Dvarlarheimili aldraðs
fólks í Borgarnesi” – Elderly people’s rest
home in Borgarnes. In an interview with L-H,
Sýslumaður Ásgeir explained that construction
on a new seniors’ home in Borgarnes had
begun earlier that fall, in September, after
years of campaigning by the Women’s
Association of Borgarfjörður. The county and
area municipalities eventually came on board
and private donors and companies helped to
raise funds for the project. Both direct and
indirect support had come from members of
the Icelandic communities in North America,
which is why L-H took an interest in the story.
In addition to describing the construction of the
seniors’ home itself, Ásgeir spoke about the
use of geothermal energy and the agricultural
economy in the Borgarfjörður district.
Earlier this year, we published a picture of
Ambassador Pétur with his elder son, Ásgeir
Hafsteinn Pétursson, but it seemed fitting to run
it again alongside the image from so many years
ago, since exactly half a century has passed since
Pétur’s photographic debut on our pages.
Ambassador Pétur and his wife, Jóhanna
Gunnarsdóttir, arrived in Ottawa on November
1, 2017, just in time for his 55th birthday two
days later, and he presented his credentials to
Governor General Julie Payette on November
20 last year. Since then, he has been ably
representing Iceland in the nation’s capital
while building relationships with Icelandic
communities and organizations all across the
country. – SMJ
