LITERATURE WEDNESDAY 14 NOVEMBER Winnipeg, MB: Book launch – Launch of You Don’t Know Me, But You Love Me: The Lives of Dick Miller (ARP Books) by Caelum Vatnsdal. 7:30 pm. McNally Robinson Grant Park. This book is a biography of beloved American movie actor Dick Miller. Miller’s fantastically storied life, the legendary people with whom he has worked and played, the times in which he’s lived and the fascinating environments of both Broadway and Hollywood over the past seventy years are all thoroughly and engagingly explored in this first and only biography of the cult legend. The result of both extensive interviews and exhaustive research, You Don’t Know Me, But You Love Me is at once story of how an unassuming guy stumbled into acting and became cult royalty, an epic love story of a man and his wife, a parallel story of an actor and his director (Corman), and a secret history of Hollywood. Referred to by Roger Corman as the “best actor in Hollywood” a favourite character actor of Quentin Tarantino, and in the words of Jonathan Demme, “a first-rate actor who makes any scene he’s in better,” Miller’s particular magic continues to work itself on Hollywood elite and movie buffs alike. Caelum Vatnsdal is a filmmaker who has made movies about disaffected youth and Bigfoot, and the author of They Came From Within: A History of Canadian Horror Cinema and Kino Delirium: The Films of Guy Maddin, both published with ARP Books. Sigurdson Collette – silverflash@shaw.ca. 29 Nov: Westward Bound, the DVD Events Literature Icelandic classes Music Exhibits Film Westward Bound The DVD The dark days of November are upon us. The gathering of family and friends in this season brings out the urge to tell stories. Lestrarfélagið Gleym-mér- ei hears the stories collected by Egill Helgason and Ragnheiður Thorsteinsson on the DVD Westward Bound as they follow the sun to Markerville, AB and the Pacific Coast, BC. In Markerville, Egill dedicates his journey to the legacy of Stephan G. Stephansson, settler to the area in 1889. Though in Alberta, Stephan's influence was so great that Icelandic school children memorizing his poems thought he lived in Iceland. We hear words from his family and friends about an outspoken man who used the power of poetry and we learn of his life in the new frontier. The 10th episode ends the series at the western end of Canada. Egill discovers more stories of Icelandic heritage in Vancouver, Victoria, Point Roberts and Osland. Join us to hear them including the one about the late Robert Asgeirsson meeting Stephan’s ghost. Linda F. Sigurdson Collette annual giving Give a Gift, Receive a Gift...
