Going Berserk
There’s a new liquor in town:
Berserkjabrennivín (‘Berserk
brennivín’). Berserk brenni-
vín is a quality Icelandic
schnapps perfumed with
coriander, cumin seed,
juniper berries and maple.
Berserk brennivín is ideal
served ice cold on its own
or accompanied with tradi-
tional dishes such as mari-
nated herring and shark.
The word berserkur (‘ber-
serk’) was originally used for a serkur
(‘tunic’) made from bearskin and later
came to mean the man dressed in such
clothing. Berserkers were usually the
first to fight on the king’s ships, facing
the most dangerous battles. Berserkers
would bite their shields and scream in
the heat of battle, frightening their ene-
mies. Such exhausting behaviour defi-
nitely needed a good watering of bren-
nivín at the end of the day!
Berserkjabrennivín is sold in the Íslandi-
ca store and The Corner Shop at Leifur
Eiríksson Terminal, located at Keflavík
International Airport. It’s available in
700 ml bottles and miniatures.
