On March 30, 1848,
Niagara Falls ran dry
thanks to ice flows
pushed by high winds
that dammed the river,
stopping the rush of the
12,000-year-old Niagara.
(Tourists visiting the falls
must’ve been quite disap-
pointed.) This was quite a
feat of nature, consider-
ing that Niagara Falls –
located on the Canadian-
US border in the province
of Ontario and the state
of New York – is the sec-
ond largest falls on planet
earth, next to Victoria
Falls in southern Africa.
Pictured is the Canadian
‘Horseshoe’ Falls, which
measure 167 feet high,
dumps 600,000 gallons of
water per second, and
attracts over 12 million
visitors a year.
