22 A T L A N T I C A The River Thames only flows 215 miles from its source in the Cotswolds through to the estuary at Southend-on-Sea, where it finally reaches the North Sea, but a world of history lies along the bends of the river. One such slice of history (pic- tured here) is the Houses of Parliament and St. Stephen’s Tower, better known as Big Ben after the famous bell that rings within.
