Eccentric Beauty Icelandic photographer Spessi will be exhibiting a series of his photographs in New York this spring with the theme being empty campsites in Iceland. Asked why he chose this topic, he answers, “Why not?” This will be Spessi’s second solo exhibition in the Big Apple, last year having exhibited a series of photographs on petrol stations. The new exhibition will feature large, one metre2 photos at the prestigious Roebling Hall gallery in Brooklyn. Asked whether he’s making quite a name for himself in New York, Spessi replies, “I’ve been doing quite well. It’s so hard to get into galleries there and it’s great to exhibit in a city which is consid- ered the world’s centre of the arts.“ Spessi is a specialist at finding beauty in places no one else thought to look. “I like the idea of travelling when no one else is around. I saw a photograph of a campsite filled with tents and I wondered what it would look like in the winter months, totally empty. I find campsites strangely beautiful, and somewhat melancholic.” AMB Catch Spessi’s visions 15 March to 22 April at Roebling Hall, 390 Wythe Avenue at South 4th Street, Brooklyn, NYC, tel: (+1) 718 599-5352, www.brooklynart.com 038-42 ATL202TjaldSpess-rm 1.2.1904 1:36 Page 39
