A Generation of Genius Richard Avedon has photographed everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Ezra Pound. Having also snapped the likes of Truman Capote, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Andy Warhol, the acclaimed photographer has captured those that shaped history. An exhibition on Avedon’s work, Richard Avedon: Portraits, will be on view through January 2003, at The Tisch Galleries in New York City. The show includes 180 portraits and has been called a “collective portrait of America in the second half of the 20th century”. The curator in charge of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Department of Photographs, Maria Morris Hambourg, who organised the exhibition, said that Avedon has “produced an extended meditation on life, death, art and identity”. He has “become our poet of portraiture”.
