Georg Hólm B A S S P L AY E R INTERVIEW 14 A T L A N T I C A Sigur Rós is a few years older and a little bit more mature, and they have a new album on the way. Georg Hólm, Sigur Rós’ bass play- er, took time out from his busy recording schedule to talk to Örlygur Thór Örlygsson about the new album, the band, travelling, studios, music videos and film- making. In the past three years, the Icelandic band Sigur Rós has made its way to the top of the ladder of cutting-edge rock. Since the band released its second album Ágætis byrjun (Good Beginning) in 1999, things have been progressing so fast that the members only recently found time to take a breather, sketch out their new record, and start recording. The band has been working up a musical sweat in its studio in Mosfellsbær during the past months, and fans are now waiting impatiently for the big day of release, which is set to be sometime before Christmas. Will the new album be very different than Ágætis byrjun? This will be a good album. It's a lot differ- ent than Ágætis byrjun, much more mature. Ágætis byrjun is a bit sweet in places, this one will not be as innocent because as people mature the music fol- lows. Some of the material that we're recording is up to two years old, and we've been playing it at concerts. When we first started to record the new album, we were a bit tired because we've played the same songs a million times and it's difficult to listen to them over and over again. But when we began to work with them, the songs came back to life and became fresh again. But, of course, the album's not finished yet, so I can't really say much about it.
