Sigrún Hrólfsdóttir. “You can be against one project without being against one whole company.” She goes on to say that the ‘Mother Nature’ piece is for an area already pop- ulated by power stations, and that hydroelectric power is cleaner than oil. But the trio is definitely against the building of the proposed power plant in east Iceland. “Right, because you can’t push the reverse button,” emphasises Eirún. “Yeah, and people visit Iceland because of the nature and creative peo- ple, not power stations,” says Jóní Jónsdóttir, completing the thoughts of her two friends. Talking to Eirún, Sigrún and Jóní, who have been working together since they graduated from the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts in 1996, is like talking to a set of triplets with a language all their own. As in the discussion on art and the politics of power, the ladies constantly build on each other’s ideas, finish each other’s sentences, and set off into a con- tinuous group giggle at the drop of a word that means absolutely nothing to the average listener. This cohesiveness is why the trio is so successful. They feed off of each other’s ideas, and, like the ‘pre-cogs’ in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, they each create selected images that pieced together build a single concept. With this collaborative effort, the trio has for the past year supported itself strictly through its creations. In other words, neither Eirún, Sigrún or Jóní has had to work a day job. “That’s very impressive considering there are three of us,” Sigrún says proudly. It’s also impressive because we don’t make art for “40-year-old birthday par- ties”, laughs Jóní. So what type of art does ILC focus its energies on? In one word: everything. They work with all types of mediums, including performance, video and instal- lations; they work in design, with film; and they write songs as well as poetry, although their poems are certainly their weakest link. For an idea of how diverse this trio of eccentric, yet practical females is, take two of their most current projects. Recently, Borgarholtsskóli high school “WE ARE PEOPLE’S ARTISTS,” SIGRÚN SAYS, SUMMING UP THE SECRET OF THEIR SUCCESS. ART 3 Icelandic Love Corporation The 026-029 ATL502 ILC 23.10.2002 11:54 Page 28
