On the northern tip of the barrier island that holds Miami Beach
is Bal Harbour, an area in which more millionaires per capita are
said to be living in one place than anywhere else in the world.
Which explains a lot about the setting of Bal Harbour Shops, a
very special mall indeed. Before heading inside, it’s good to
keep the following story of billionaire JP Morgan in mind (after
whom the investment bank is named). JP Morgan was once at
a dock where a brand new and sparkling yacht lay moored.
Next to him was a young stranger, also admiring the vessel.
After a while, the young man asked, “How much do you think it
cost?” To which JP Morgan retorted: “If you have to ask, you
can't afford it.” This is a fine motto to keep in mind before ven-
turing into Bal Harbour Shops, where some of the world’s most
famous names in fashion stand shoulder to shoulder: Bulgari,
Cartier, Chanel, Prada, Hermés, Armani, Versace and Tiffany’s,
to name just a few, as well as specialty department stores
Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
For those with a penchant for designer clothing but not an
unlimited maximum on their credit cards, this might just be the
ultimate window-shopping experience. JK ONE OF BAL HARBOUR’S GIFT SUGGESTIONS

Icelandic design is hitting Europe’s capital of fashion this spring and will feature
at the VIA exhibition rooms in Paris in May. This launches a huge cam-
paign promoting Icelandic culture, beginning in the capital next
autumn at the instigation of the Icelandic Embassy in Paris and the
Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The exhibition will be high-
ly original, focusing on design in both present and future, cap-
turing the creative spirit of art and design in Iceland in recent
years. Today, Icelandic designers all over the world are com-
ing up with fabulous ideas and are quickly becoming a
strong presence on the international scene. Thus the exhi-
bition should inspire curiosity about Icelandic design and
modern Icelandic culture in general. AMB
