The holidays are the perfect time to sample the best of
Icelandic cuisine. Three Christmas buffets, from Perlan,
Laekjarbrekka and Loftleidir, offer experiences that will
easily make up for the pesky weather and darkness.
The Perlan, the rotating restaurant with a view of all of
Reykjavík, delivers an opulent feast of Icelandic game
and holiday specialties. While locals have already booked
every weekend night through January, visitors can
squeeze in Monday through Thursday.
Lækjarbrekka in downtown Reykjavík also offers a holi-
day buffet that shouldn’t be missed. Everything at this
restaurant is conducted with a certain hearty generosity.
We particularly recommend the Christmas herring and

reindeer pâté. For a very full, very traditional meal, this
restaurant with its perfect view of holiday foot traffic is an
attraction in and of itself.
Finally, the Loftleidir Hotel celebrates the holidays with
a Danish-Icelandic buffet put on by acclaimed chef Ida
Davidsen. Icelanders flock to Loftleidir to sample Davidsen’s
interpretation of traditional dishes like smoked lamb and
mustard herring, to say nothing of her deserts, including an
astounding chocolate mousse.
We recommend all of these buffets strongly. If you have
three nights in Iceland, spend one at each. There’ll be time
