December 1
INDEPENDENCE DAY
On December 1, 1918, Iceland was officially declared an independent
nation, and now all school kids have a day off to celebrate.
December 21
WINTER SOLSTICE
Keep the candles burning because this is the darkest day of the year
– the sun struggles above the horizon at 11:21 am, and by 3:30 pm it
slips away.
December 23
ST. THORLÁKUR DAY
The day before Christmas Eve pays tribute to one of the few indigenous
saints of Iceland, Thorlákur Thórhallsson. How do they do it? By keeping
the downtown shops open until midnight so thousands upon thousands
of Icelanders can finish their last minute shopping. Head downtown and
join the crowd. It’s a tradition.
December 24
ADFANGADAGUR JÓLA - CHRISTMAS EVE
The church bells toll at 6 pm, ringing in the official start of Iceland’s
13 days of Christmas. Icelanders open gifts at the crack of midnight.
December 25
ANNAR Í JÓLUM – THE SECOND DAY OF CHRISTMAS
A day very much like the previous day.
December 31
GAMLÁRSKVÐLD – NEW YEAR’S EVE
Party on with the explosion of fireworks when the clock strikes mid-
night. Then head to the pubs for a night of debauchery and drink.
