What I didn’t realize was that I was living in one of North America’s
dim sum epicenters. Once I moved to Europe, I found that not everyone
knew the ins and outs of this ancient spin on brunch. I took it for granted
that all cosmopolitan cities had a good spot to nibble on pork dumplings
or slurp down shrimp-stuffed noodles.
I was headed to New York City for a few days, and I thought I’d do a
little food tourism in Chinatown while I was on the road. I knew I would
find myself at home amidst its dim sum halls. What I didn’t know was
that I would get a little education myself.
FIRST COURSE – ON THE DIM SUM TRAIL
Dim sum literally means “dot heart,” but is often translated as “touch
the heart” from Cantonese. It is generally taken to mean “order to your
heart’s content,” which is what many do when they sit in the large crim-
son dining halls.
