48 AT L A N T I CA Vodka on the Rocks... Lava Rocks How do you prefer your vodka? Do you mix it with cranberry juice? Do you enjoy screwdrivers? What about vodka with a splash of Coke – the favorite choice of partying college students? Put all those mixes down for a moment. Reyka, the first vodka to be distilled in Iceland, doesn’t need any help. “Drink it neat,” says Fjalar Sigurdarson, with the PR firm handling the Reyka Vodka account. “Treat the spirit the same way you would a good Bordeaux.” Reyka Vodka is the only vodka fully distilled in Iceland – Borgarnes, West Iceland, to be exact. The water (some of the purest in the world, they say) used in both the distillation process and the final blending of Reyka Vodka is sourced from Grábrók Spring, located in a 4,000-year-old lava field. It makes sense, then, that in the final purification process, the spirit passes through a lava rock filtration basket, stripping out any remain- ing impurities. Reyka Vodka is made in small batches of 900 liters at a time with a Carter-Head still, specially commissioned by William Grant&Sons, famous for their Glenfiddich Whisky. In the end, you have a premium vodka pure as Iceland itself, which is one reason Reyka is garnering so much attention, having just been nominated as the vodka for 2006 by the NY Post. Of course, you don’t have to drink it on the rocks. Get a hold of Reyka’s recipe book and make yourself a Reyka Blueberry Martini, a Hot Rock Reyka, or a Hekla Mary – Reyka Vodka, tomato juice, a pinch of seasoning, salt, a dash of freshly ground pepper, some lemon juice, a bit of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce to taste. Then watch out for the eruption. www.reykavodka.com 48Pg. ICELANDa SPECIAL PROMOTION P H O TO B Y P Á LL S TE FÁ N S S O N 048-53 Atl 106 Suburbs+Ice copy.indd 48 21.2.2006 13:07:38
