➔ ➔ Icelandair Group’s annual ball saw record attendance this year when over 1,800 people gathered for a night of rock and roll. “The purpose of the ball was literally to rock the group together and celebrate the recent changes to the Icelandair Group, with more companies joining the team,” said Áslaug Thelma Einarsdóttir, Manager Corporate Communications Icelandair Group. “The evening was glamorous and we had a lot of fun. Many employees had a hand in organizing this spectacular evening with its ‘Music Award Night’ theme.” The theme was fit- ting, since the company’s main sponsorship activities are with Icelandic musicians through Iceland Airwaves and the Reykjavík travel fund for musicians, Loftbrú.” Áslaug added, “Icelandair Group’s employees are without question the best team in the world whether it comes to work or fun and this annual ball was without a doubt a milestone in our history.” 71 Eight couples were married by Rev. Pálmi Matthíasson onboard an Icelandair flight from Amsterdam to Reykjavík on Valentine’s Day, 14 February. It’s not every day that couples get legally wed at 30,000 ft, but to celebrate Valentine’s Day and the 15th anniversary of Icelandair flights between Amsterdam and Iceland, this was made possible for eight lucky couples. To commemorate the first Icelandair flight between Amsterdam and Keflavík Iceland, representatives of Schiphol Airport invited all the couples for a wedding cake cutting ceremony with champagne before take-off. The wedding march was played when the couples boarded the aircraft, all dressed in their very best, and other passengers wel- comed them with major applause. When the couples said “I do” over the intercom, many of the passengers used this unique opportunity to take pictures of the beautiful ceremony. The newlyweds stayed in Iceland for 3 to 5 days, enjoying a honey- moon spa treatment at the Blue Lagoon, wedding dinner at Nordica Hotel, and an adventurous sightseeing trip around Iceland. “It was very enjoyable for Icelandair to take part in making the couple’s wedding day a special occasion,” said Gunnar Már Sigurfinnsson, Icelandair SVP Marketing and Sales. “This is the first time we’ve offered this on our European routes, but we have been doing this for a few years now on Valentine’s Day on routes from America to Iceland with great success. We found a lot of interest in Holland, and our Icelandair staff in Amsterdam put together this unique package with an emphasis on making it a personal and warm experience for the couples.” Onboard were representatives from two of the biggest news stations in Holland who, Gunnar added, showed great interest. “This will without a doubt be a positive promotion for Iceland and Icelandair.” Love is in the Air Icelandair at w o r kRocking the Group 2 Gether Saga Lounge Promotes Icelandic Artists The latest in a series of art exhibits at the new Saga Lounge at Keflavík International Airport is the work of Hrafnkell Sigurdsson, brought to visitors by Gallery Turpentine in Reykjavík. The artist’s work examines the transi- tory elements in man’s relationship with nature, playing with the themes of reversal and ritual. His photographic series include images of empty tents in the snow, houses under construction, garbage bags in the streets and, most recently, portraits of trash. It is most unusual, and a must-see for all Saga Lounge guests.
