manage to take advantage of some of the more
esoteric spa features. You get a Vichy shower, coat
yourself in mud and then bake in a wood drying
hut in awkward silence next to a mud-slathered
couple, and rub yourself down with crushed ice
in a dubious treatment called “Diamonds of the
Gods.”
As you get back on the road back towards the
lake, you are relaxed, but wondering in your rush
if you made all the right choices. You didn’t block
off a longer day to drive up from Bormio to the
Stelvio Pass, one of the highest mountain passes
in Europe, which takes you to an access point of
summer skiing on the Alpine glaciers. You didn’t
get to visit one of Valtellina’s famous wineries or
dairies, or even stop off at one of the many fruit
stands along the road back to town.
But that’s how it goes with 48 hours in a place
that has a lot going on. It moves fast, and if you
spend a lot of time regretting what you did or
didn’t do, your time there is gone.
So don’t worry. You did good. And maybe
you’ll even go back someday. a
