89 COMEDY Everybody loves Raymond (For further information, see Sept. column) ENTERTAINMENT Top Gear: Consistently BBC2’s most-watched program, Top Gear attracts audi- ences of nearly 4 million every week. The show’s popularity is the result of it’s revealing reviews delivered with irreverence, wit and unbiased honesty. In the final program of the current series, is Jeremy driving faster in real life or on a computer game? And the ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’ is Little Britain’s David Walliams. MOVIE The Break-Up: Pushed to the breaking-up point, art dealer Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) calls it quits with her boyfriend (Vince Vaughn). What follows is a series of remedies, war tactics, overtures and underminings suggested by the former couple’s friends, confidantes and the occasional total stranger. When neither ex is willing to move out of the condo they used to share, the only solu- tion is to continue living as hostile roommates until somebody caves. COMEDY Everybody Hates Chris - Pilot Inspired by his childhood experiences, comedian Chris Rock narrates the hilarious, touching story of a teenager struggling to cope with being uprooted to a new neighborhood in Brooklin, and bused for the first time to a pre- dominantly white mid- dle school two hours away, while keeping his younger siblings in line at home. A great new sitcom from Paramount. After the agent tells Robert he has a unique look, he convinces him to pose for headshots with their “in-house” photographer. But when Robert and Ray return for the pictures, they are surprised to find the modeling agency has mysteriously disappeared. ENTERTAINMENT Top Gear: (For further information, see Oct. column) MOVIE The Da Vinci Code: Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman, the Oscar- winning director and writer of A Beautiful Mind, reunite to bring Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, one of the most popular and controversial novels of our time, to the big screen with a cast headed by two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Sir Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina and Jean Reno. The Da Vinci Code begins with a spec- tacular murder in the Louvre Museum. All clues point to a covert religious organization that will stop at nothing to protect a secret that threatens to overturn 2000 years of accepted dogma. While revealing his innermost thoughts to Dr. Taber (William Hurt), Arthur starts having flashbacks and discovers his prob- lems stem from his relationship with his father, Seamus (Ben Stiller), who ignored him and doted on his younger brother. MOVIE There’s Something About Mary The Farrelly brothers’ comedy favorite, full of their trademark outrageous humor, follows a lovelorn thirtysomething (Ben Stiller) who hires a private detective (Matt Dillon) to track down his date from the high school prom he never attended. Things go awry when the detective falls for her, as does every man who meets her. MUSIC Smooth Jazz A calming mix of instrumental and vocal ballads. The show is a combination of live interviews, biographies, concert footage and video. COMEDY Police Squad Created by the same loonies who brought us “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun”, “Police Squad” is a satirical comedy that pits police captain Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) and his ace detec- tive against the criminal elements that befoul a big city. In this episode, Drebin’s probe of a rob- bery-murder roots out clues that prompt at least another look at the story of a beautiful blonde cashier who is experiencing financial difficulties with her orthodontist.
