located in Hvalfjördur (southwest Iceland), and the geothermal power will feed
Reykjavík’s needs. The plant should ease the burden of Nesjavallavirkjun, the only
geothermal power plant currently supplying the area with power, by enabling
the supply of low-temperature ground water to replenish naturally. It’s called
“living within the reservoir”.
At Reykjavík Energy, a power plant is more than a facility to generate power.
Therefore, plans are in the works to integrate outdoor facilities with the plant at
Hellisheidi, possibly using the steam to create baths and spas in a new mountain
lagoon. Excess power from the plant can also be diverted to turn the local skiing
area into a top-notch resort. This is another way to utilise an area’s natural
resources without depleting the supplies of those resources.
