The Icelandic national team in men’s football (soccer)
ranks 54th on the FIFA World Ranking, published
in September, up 16 places with 599 points. Iceland
is now sandwiched between Australia and Armenia.
Spain remains on top, followed by Argentina, while
Sweden is the top Nordic nation at number 22. The

hEArt For An Airport
Campaign group Hjartað í Vatnsmýri (‘The Heart in Vatnsmýri’) presented Mayor of
Reykjavík Jón Gnarr in September with more than 69,000 signatures from people who
are against relocating Reykjavík Domestic Airport. It’s the biggest petition Iceland has ever
seen with approximately 22 percent of the nation signing it. ESA

The number of foreign citizens liv-
ing in Iceland has increased between
years for the first time since 2008.
At the beginning of 2013, there
were 21,446 foreign citizens liv-
ing in Iceland, or 6.7 percent of
the population, up by around 600
individuals since 2012, according to
a report from Fjölmenningarsetur,
the Multicultural and Information
Centre. Eight percent of children
four years and under in Iceland
are second generation immigrants.
People of Polish origin are the largest
immigrant group, making up three
percent of the country’s population.
The highest proportion of immi-
grants can be found in the West
Fjords and in Suðurnes, Southwest
Iceland, followed by Reykjavík. ZR
