78 ICELAND REVIEW
Iceland’s Best Dining Experience
Gallery Restaurant, run by master chef Friðgeir Ingi Eiríksson, was named Best
Restaurant in Iceland in 2012 by the Nordic Prize, scored 98/100 from the Institute for
Hospitality Management and landed a Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor in
2013. While arguably offering the best dining experience in Iceland, value for money
is a guarantee. Since its opening in 1966, Gallery Restaurant has remained classy and
conservative, both in style and choice of menu. The ever-popular cured salmon has
been the same from the start, yet innovation is embraced too, as in the lobster soup
with roasted chocolate. Fresh Icelandic seafood, lamb and beef are always available—
the beef is specially selected and aged for the restaurant. Gallery Restaurant also boasts
the largest collection of wine in Iceland and the country’s largest private art collection,
including works by all the Icelandic grand masters. holt.is

for great gifts or souvenirs to bring back home. Open Tuesdays-Sundays 11 am-5 pm,

Century of Watchmakers
The story of Michelsen Watchmakers goes back an entire century, to 1909, when the
first of the Michelsens established a small business in Iceland under the family name.
Since then, the firm has been owned and operated by the same family and is now
owned by the third generation of Michelsen master watchmakers. Michelsen is their
own line of quality watches, created by the third and fourth generation of Michelsen
watchmakers. The Michelsen shop on Laugavegur, the main shopping street in
Reykjavík, offers a wide assortment of watches and jewelry, including many interna-
tionally-known brands. First and foremost among these are the world-famous Rolex
watches. Among other interesting pieces are RJ-Romain Jerome, Tudor, Movado, Jorg
Gray, Jacques Lemans and the famous Danish brands Georg Jensen, Rosendahl and
Arne Jacobsen. michelsen.is
