Iceland review - 2015, Síða 24

O
ne late winter
morning, stand-
ing on the south
coast, feeling the
cool but gentle
breeze coming
from the south, the sun
started to rise in the south-
east before going down a
bit further to the west—in
midwinter, it appears as if
the sun both rises and sets in
the south. Pure magic.
It’s the light and the
ever-changing character of
the Icelandic coastline which
draws me again and again
to where the sea meets the
land. The light delights in
every season, from the short
days of the midwinter, to the
endless days in the height of
summer, when the sun takes
up residence in the north of
Iceland, north of the Arctic
Circle.
And the Icelandic coast-
line is long; nearly 5,000
km (3,000 miles), four times
longer than Ring Road One,
which circles the island,
the same distance as from
Reykjavík to South Dakota,
South Carolina, northern
Azerbaijan, or northern
Mali.
My favorite place on the
coast? Could it be Kálfs-
hamarsvík on Skagi pen-
insula, Northwest Iceland,
during a good winter’s
storm? Maybe… *
