Powering the Future
– Secure, Sustainable,
Affordable Energy
With global energy consumption on the
rise, the landscape of the energy sector
is changing dramatically. Energy prices
are predicted to rise in the medium-to-long-term,
carbon emissions present an increasingly com-
plicated concern, and power security is under
threat. In the face of such challenges, Iceland is
an attractive and stable environment for power
intensive industries. Its reliable, long-term power
contracts are derived from 100 percent renewable
energy sources and are offered at some of the
most competitive prices in Europe.
ACHIEVING POWER SECURITY
Solving the issue of power security is essential
if energy intensive industries want to establish a
long-term competitive advantage. Given Iceland’s
Many industries have taken advantage of the
stability and dependability of Iceland’s energy
resources. For instance, Iceland is the sec-
ond-largest aluminum producer in Europe.
Landsvirkjun powers the plants and smelters of
Alcoa, Rio Tinto and Century Aluminum, as well
as Becromal, which manufactures aluminum foil
for electrolytic capacitors. It also provides energy
to ferrosilicon production, scrap metal recycling
and recently contracted with a silicon metal pro-
ducer. Data centers are also becoming a growth
segment for the Icelandic power market, and for
Landsvirkjun.
Some of the world’s most prominent data
centers—including Google, Facebook and
Iceland-based Verne Global—have located oper-
ations in Nordic countries, where power security
is stable, energy sources are clean and renew-
rich energy resources, Landsvirkjun, the National
Power Company of Iceland, is able to offer a
threefold solution to this problem:
• PHYSICAL SECURITY, including
ample, locally available energy resources
and solid electricity transmission.
• PRICE SECURITY, due to Iceland’s
reliance on hydro- and geothermal power
instead of fossil fuels, as well as long-
term, fixed-price contracts.
• CARBON SECURITY, since carbon
tax risk is fully negated in a 100 percent
renewable energy environment.
Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland, is helping to solve
the global issue of power security.
