I’ve been everywhere in Iceland. Working as a
photographer for this magazine, I’ve traveled
to every corner of the country, and been to
some places countless times. I’ve visited every
fjord, driven on every road, sailed to every
island, and climbed innumerable mountaintops.
Except one place: the island of Flatey in
Skjálfandi bay (page 62). Finally, I made it there
with journalist Eygló, in the beginning of July.
And what a place it was. It felt like traveling
50 years back in time. No electricity grid and
few tourists, but we were welcomed by a
fabulous fog.
Now I have covered all of Iceland. Or not.
No, actually it takes more than a lifetime to
discover Iceland. Like on a recent trip to the
West Fjords (page 22), where I saw the region
literally in a different light. Places I had passed a
number of times came to life at the height of this
unusually cold summer.
I do like the region; it’s one of my favorites.
But I didn’t even see the absolute best part of it
for this issue, Hornstrandir, where my wife’s
family hails from. She, photographer Áslaug
Snorradóttir, and Zoë went there to check out
what’s happening in this most remote part of the
Republic (page 36).
Our coverage of the West Fjords doesn’t end
there: Eygló digs into the darkest part of the
area’s history, writing about the massacre of
Basque whalers which occurred there exactly
400 years ago (page 48).
But Iceland Review is not only about remote
places, we also run alongside Mayor of
Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson (page 6), talk to
internationally-acclaimed film director Baltasar
Kormákur (page 16), visit the lungs of Reykjavík,
Laugardalur valley (page 42), feature an
Ethiopian restaurant in a South Iceland
countryside village (page 54), and discuss the
achievements and misfortunes of the coalition
government which has ruled the Republic now
for two long years (page 57).
