David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, and one of the 1.3 million visitors who traveled to Iceland last year, spoke during his Reykjavík visit in October about a proposed submarine power cable connecting the two nations as a “win-win situation” for the UK and Iceland. But is it so? Zoë (page 52) looks at our so- called green renewable energy, produced in Iceland. Should we dam more, do we have energy to export to energy-hungry Europe? And what about the new dams and power lines? Do they destroy our cash cow: the unspoiled wilderness of the interior of Iceland? In 2015, Iceland’s nature and landscape drew more than four times its population, which is stretching the infrastructure and threatening the fragile nature of our country. Halldór Lárusson (page 56) looks at how the new Nature Protection Act may impact our right to roam. We are stubborn, still whaling against all odds. As the government assesses the cost of ignoring demands to cease the practice, we take a look at the issue (page 70). And we bring you the latest crop of landscape pictures (page 28), from Bakkafjörður in the northeast, to the southernmost beach in Iceland, west of Dyrhólaey, at the southern tip of Iceland. We also feature the work of photojournalist Ólafur K. Magnússon (1926-97) (page 66) and contemporary portrait and fashion photographer Anna Ósk Erlingsdóttir (page 38). Plus, we speak with writer, designer and musician Ragnar Helgi Ólafsson (page 14) and award-winning film director Rúnar Rúnarsson (page 20). That’s not all: we also go to London, joining Icelandic farmers and food producers (page 44) at Borough Market; then we visit some of the creative people who call Stykkishólmur (page 60), West Iceland, home; and, of course, we bring you the Last Page, on the last page of the magazine (112), where it has been for the last 40 years.
