BRINGING VIKING-ERA ICELAND TO LIFE
The Settlement Center,
located in Borgarnes, an
hour’s drive from Reykjavík,
has long inspired guests with
its imaginative approach to
Icelandic history and culture.
Part art installation, part
walk-through storybook,
the first exhibition recreates
settlement-era Iceland, while
the second explores the col-
orful life of the poet-warrior
Egill Skallagrímsson.

Skógar Museum was founded in 1949
and preserves the cultural heritage of
South Iceland. The pieces were col-
lected at a turning point in the history
of the Icelandic nation. The old rural
society was vanishing, a new culture
was taking root. In reconstructions of
old turf farmhouses, visitors can see
how the people of past times were
living. In 2002, a large exhibition fa-
cility was built to house exhibits from
the technological age that began
in Iceland at the beginning of the
20th century. This new museum, The
Museum of Transport and Communi-
cation has a spacious cafeteria and a
beautiful souvenir shop.
