MEETING
ICELANDIC CANADIAN FRÓN
THE ANNUAL MEETING of the Icelandic Canadian
Frón was held in Winnipeg on Tuesday, May 2 at the
First Lutheran Church.
President Dr. Gestur Kristjanson called the meeting
to order and gave a brief report on the activities of
the club in the last year. Secretary Kristin Olson gave
the secretary’s report, followed by the treasurer’s re-
port read by John Johanson. The club’s financial pos-
ition is a good one, according to the report.
A1 Nelson chairman of the public relations committee
told those attending the meeting that the logo compe-
tition has been completed and a winner chosen. The
winner is Mrs. Evelyn Thorvaldson, whose entry top-
ped the 13 entries submitted.
Liaison officer Mrs. Norma Kristjanson reported
that the Scandinavian Centre on Young Street has been
sold and plans are being made for the opening of a new
centre. Mrs. Kristjanson said that she and other memb-
ers of the board will remain in contact with centre of-
ficials and club members will be informed of any new
developments.
Stefan Stefanson, president of the Icelandic National
League, addressed the meeting, following the reading
of committee reports.
Mr. Stefanson informed club members of a bus tour
being planned for anyone interested in attending the
Icelandic Centennial celebrations at Mountain, North
Dakota on Saturday, July 1.
He complimented the board on the excellent program
of the pást season, especially those gatherings held at
the church this past winter, as well as the various
social activies held throughout the year. All of those
activities were very well attended, he noted.
Mrs. Bvelyn Thorvaldson won the Icelandic Canadian Frón I
competition and here she is with the prize, an Icelandic sheeps
Dr. Kristjanson. then handed over a sheepskin' to
Mrs. Evelyn Thorvaldson, winner of the club’s logo
competition. (A picture of the winning logo will be
published in the paper in the future.)
Bill Helgason, chairman of the nominating com-
mittee, presented his committee’s recommendations
for the upcoming executive.
Club officers for the 1978-79 year are Mrs. Iris Torfa-

Dr. Oscar Olson, first vice-president; A1 Nelson, second
vice-president; Sharron Wild, recording secretary.
Following adjournment at 9.15 p.m., coffee and re-
freshments were served. Len Vopnfjord showed slides
from Iceland and members heard a partial recording
of the Rio Trio concert held in Winnipeg last fall.
About 30 club members attended the meeting.
BRITISH COLUMBIA
THE ICELANDIC CANADIAN CLUB of British
Columbia will hold a card party on Friday, May 26 at
7 p.m. in the recreation room, Höfn, 2020 Harrison
Drive, Vancouver.
Games of bridge, whist, crib and shuffleboard will be
enjoyed, to be followed by a sing-song of Icelandic and
Canadian folk songs. Coffee and refreshments will be
served. Everyone welcome.

The film “They shouldn’t call Iceland Iceland” will be
shown in Baldur, Manitoba on May 24th at 8:00 p.m.
in the Church.

The Icelandic Pioneer Ceme-
tary committee at Gimli is
now launching its annual
drive for funds to maintain
and beautify the cemetary
grounds in 1978.
Donations will be used to
purchase flowers, and hire
people to cut the grass, re-
pair the fences and trim the
border hedge.
It should not be forgotten
that this cemetary is the
only Icelandic cemetary
known in the Western

Richard M. Wilson, of Seattle, is one of our many new sub-
schibers. Richard was a member of the American forces in
Iceland for several years, where he met and married his
wife. The couple lived in Iceland, before moving back to the
United States.
